Playa Barqueta, David, Panama - December 2006

We visited Playa Barqueta Beach to help release a nest of hatched turtles.

We had not been to this part of the Pacific Ocean here in Panama - it was very secluded and beautiful.

After the turtle lays it's eggs the nest is protected from wild dogs and locals. The locals will sell the eggs in the local bars because it is known to make the men viral.

There were about 150 hatchlings in this nest and we each got our own group of turtles to cheer along. They walked about 50 feet to the ocean and we just helped if they looked like they were heading in the wrong direction.

When the first ones hit the water it was like sending your kids off to college for the first time. It's a big world out there and you just wondered if they were going to make it.

There was a group of about 15 of us, mostly gringos.

We stayed for the sunset and drank some beers in the local beach bar.

This is the turtles nest enclosure. We came at the end of the season and most of the nests had hatched.
